I have learned a lot about conditioning throughout my career as a strength & conditioning coach working with high-level athletes.

I've also encountered many failures as an athlete following the so called "experts."

I walked off the stage in tears...

It was 2014 at my third Commonwealth Games. I was in top shape. Had the best training cycle leading into the competition I've EVER had.

If you're familiar with the sport of Olympic Weightlifting, you get 3 chances at the Snatch. And 3 chances at the Clean & Jerk. If you miss all 3 chances for either lift, you don't register a total and are disqualified from the competition. Known as "bombing."

My confidence was sky high. Everything I had done to this point had me feeling the most prepared I had ever been physically. I felt the same way as I warmed up behind the stage.

But something changed as I was about to step on stage for my first Snatch attempt.

I was no longer my beaming, confident self.

I became NUMBINGLY nervous...

Like my legs were no longer attached to my body. Jelly... wobbly...

I changed my routine before heading on stage and got so psyched up that I started feeling ANXIOUS and my breathing became restricted.

I told myself "ignore these feelings" as I was trying to convince myself to make this lift.

I settle by the barbell and get ready to lift before the timer runs out.

Before the clock hit 10 seconds, I gave everything to get that bar overhead in one swift movement.

What most people don't realize is that performance anxiety can mess with your coordination... badly. We go into a state of "fight or flight."

I found out very quickly this was happening to me as I dropped the barbell in front of me.

THREE RED LIGHTS. NO LIFT.

I was DEVASTATED. I felt like a failure. I felt like I let my family and coach down.

These are all feelings I'm sure you've experienced.

Fast forward to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. It was my time for REDEMPTION!

This was my best total on the International stage resulting in a Bronze Medal, 6/6 lifts, and 3 South African records.

Dr. James Morehen is a performance nutritionist who has worked with elite level athletes for the last 8 years. He has worked with Rocky Fielding for the past 6 years during which Rocky has won the British, Commonwealth and World Super Middleweight Belts.
